Though the latest Lupus movie The Red Reformatory: Old Friends features four harsh canings, this isn’t primarily a spanking film. It’s a thriller.
I was so enthralled while watching it that I even didn’t move from my chair to get myself a cigarette from the other room… if you miss a scene, you won’t understand the film anymore… it’s about murder, spying, revenge, betrayal – and all converging in a communist girls’ reformatory school (exactly the orphanage that we already know from The Teddy Bear – which means we meet some well known characters).
Lupus Pictures seems to get better and better with every film they make – concerning the content / plot and the technical realization. It’s just incredible how they can maintain their output of one movie every month…
Already the opening is remarkable: Scenes in black and white from WW II, connecting the cruelties of the Nazi with those of the communists. The quintessence: A traitor will always be a traitor, and a criminal will remain a criminal, no matter in which regime he is living. The historical awareness and credibility of this movie is perhaps higher than in any other Lupus film dealing with post-war Czechoslovakian society, as it’s especially dealing with those turncoats that worked for the fascists as long as the Hitler regime was at the power, and then became informants for the communist secret police.

The main plot, summarized very roughly: There’s this reformatory school where mostly daughters of political opponents are ‘re-educated’ (which means beaten into submission… – in fact the film begins already with 50 of the best delivered with a cane in less than 2 minutes on the bottom of a poor girl), and this time two new inmates are brought into the institution: an English (an outstanding Niki Flynn who has to take the most cruel caning of her career as a spanking actress) and a Russian girl (brilliantly played by Adele Haze whose butt isn’t treated much better).
The secret service wants to know if they have any important informations, so they put another girl in their room with the task to spy them out. The three girls conspire to flee but are caught and get punished. The Czech girl is the first to be caned; warden Umlaufova delivers her a harsh caning – but not harsh enough for StB agent Vesely (Pavel Štastný)… he’s getting a more severe cane and administers the cruel punishment to the two foreigners himself…

That’s just the main plot (the one that leads to the canings), but there are several micro-plots wrapped around it (all the political enmeshments, old enemies, and so on … not to forget Lars Moebius playing an likeable alcoholic doctor).
In my personal opinion, this is the best of those Lupus films dealing with Czech communist history. Maybe even their best movie ever, I’m not sure. And they still maintain the balance between putting an ambitious story into action and delivering excellent spanking entertainment.

So … if you are a regular Lupus customer, you will without doubt buy this film. If you watch one from time to time, you just can’t miss this extraordinary piece. And if you always wanted to see one but you’ve never been sure: get this one. It’s worth it.
