“The normal is a mixture of perversions” - Dr. Ernst Schertel’s monumental work on flagellation

Friday, May 25th, 2007

This is one of the ‘gems’ of my small spanking library: Dr. Ernst Schertel’s Der Flagellantismus als literarisches Motiv (Parthenon Leipzig 1929-1932), first published as a series of over 20 numbers; I have a reprint in 10 volumes from 1957 (published at Franz Becker, Stuttgart, with the title Der Flagellantismus in Literatur und Bildnerei).

Schertel (1884 – 1958) was a free-thinker in a time in which free thinking wasn’t the best estimated quality of a man, so it’s no wonder that he didn’t have any major social success with his researches on erotica, nudism and flagellantism. He was a philosopher, author, choreographer for new forms of dance, teacher, mathematician, engineer, illustrator, composer and did a lot of research on language and history.

Schertel had – influenced by contemporary psychology – a rather holistic view on men (all translations are by myself, so please excuse errors):

The comprehensive and profound sexual science of the last decades has shown what a basic role sexuality plays within the whole psychic life, and thus it has overcome a bunch of disbeliefs that wanted to cut men into a “sensual” and a “mental” part, whereby only the “mental” one was considered to have a right to exist.

Schertel knows about the relativity of ideas and claims an objective and neutral view on sexuality:

Thus the man of today is viewing “evil” and “viciousness” with other eyes than before, and he knows well that these terms are very relative and uncertain, and that everything depends of the party that is rendering a judgement.

With his almost deconstructivistic method (decades before deconstructivism, but influences from thinkers like Nietzsche are evident) he is playing off society’s marginalized elements (the “perversions”) against the mass of “normality”:

“Aberration” and “perversion” don’t mean a random “divergence” or “deviation”, but represent the pure distillation of elements that are also given in the “normal”, in which they – as a result of dilution and mixture – don’t emerge that striking though. Just like in a lemon the citric acid is stronger than in a lemonade. One could coin the paradox: “The normal is a mixture of perversions”, just that no one of them is clearly striking. Thus, all sexuality is like the light that has a countless number of frequencies. If some frequencies are stronger stressed, or if some are not there, we can speak of “colours”; if all frequencies are synchronizing, we have the “normal” colourless daylight. In this way, the so called “perversions” are just certain “colours” within the whole spectrum of sexuality.

Schertel’s thoughts were surely influenced by his own biography which can in many aspects be seen as the biography of thousands of “deviants” of a whole century in which they were told nothing other from society, state and church than they were sick and had to be cured… Schertel’s introduction is ending with a paragraph that is almost an “absolution”:

The healing word for all these people can only be this one: “Take your disposition up into your will and go your destined way to your reserved fulfilment!” Of course within the borders of the natural law not to harm your fellows.

So, what’s this book about? The whole work is too complex to do a deep going review, I’ll just introduce you its chapters in a few words along with some images. If you’re interested in the original covers and all reprints, go to BDSM Art Zone they have pictures of all issues there.

The first part is called “Der Backfisch” and collects images, stories and true accounts of spanking during adolescence on 121 pages.

The next section has the title “Spiel Spott und Galanterie” (”Play, Mockery and Gallantry”) and features the more playful and funny aspects of flagellation. There are lots of caricatures, satirical poetry, funny stories, many of them with a critical impetus towards the pedagogic use of spanking (see here: “Christian Love”).

“Scham und Ausschweifung” follows (”Shame and Excess”), where we read about flagellation between the poles of conservation und surrender of the self. This part is illustrated with unique photos like “The Sadist’s Bride” or “Punishment Hour in the Convent” (see below).

The following chapter “Selbstpeinigung” is about self-spanking (indeed one of only few documents on that topic that I know). We can read a lot about ancient and contemporary cultures and groups who practise(d) auto-flagellation, as well as about erotic self-torture of masochists that live their lonely lives without a counterpart.

Part 5 is called “Der Mann unter der Rute”, “The Male under the Whip” and deals on over two volumes of the whole work with male masochism. There are far more illustrations than photos, probably because men would in no way have participated in a femdom photoshoot in 1900… (and most of the portrayed women of that period have been prostitutes…)

The next chapter is entitled “Empfindsamkeit” (”Sentimentality”) and deals – on a few pages only –with the phenomenon of pain, both in a physical and psychical way. The examples from literature reach from Homer until Goethe.

It is followed by “Der Romantische Marquis” (”The Romantic Marquis”): Sadomasochism during romanticism.

The 8th part (”Der Fetisch”) gives a cultural history of “fetishes” since the Stone Age and explains modern fetishism in the context of flagellation (e.g. by depicting “flagelloid poses”).

It continues with “Lobreden” (”Eulogies”), an interesting chapter which brings countless examples of “glorification” of butts, flagellation, and so on. There are even photos of every possible form that the buttocks can have (”round”, “extreme round”, “conic”, “double half-moon”, etc…)

Chapter 10 is fully dedicated to clothing and especially panties and their fetishistic meaning.

The part with the title “Die Satansbibel” (”The Satanic Bible”) is not only exploring sadomasochism in the context of occultism and ancient sects and cults, but also tries to see flagellation as a ritualized form of sexuality.

It follows “Stilformen und Methoden” (”Styles and Methods”) which deals with the aesthetic implications of sadomasochism for literature and art (pictures: some expressionist Russian art, and “The Sadist” and “The Female Jailer”, both in a “decorative compositional photographic style”).

The chapter “Pervertierung” is about those phenomenons that are really pathologic or go beyond a pure sexual meaning of sadomasochism, e.g. psychic sadism / masochism or crimes like rape. Schertel is turning moral upside down here, like many artists of his time he’s stating that the true perversion is that of a bourgeois society that’s suppressing any form of free vital expression in the name of moral.

The last volume closes the circle with “Knaben” (”Boys”) by examining flagellating minors between the poles of paedophilia and education (picture: “After the Lesson”).

The whole work is a treasure chest for everyone interested in the cultural history of corporal punishment, if my article made you curious: There are few exemplars available in some well sorted second-hand bookshops throughout Europe (try a search on antiquariat search engines).

Review: At the Psychologist by Kshara

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

I’ve got another Kshara review for you: At the Psychologist, a 36 min 442MB movie at highes quality (DivX @ 1500kbps, resolution: 480×384) with stunning Nicole who has played in six Kshara movies so far and seems to be a real painslut like I love it… ;)

I think if a girl is whipped, you can somehow distinguish from her screaming and moaning if she’s just feeling the pain or if she’s somehow enjoying it. Frankly said, I like it more if I can recognize some kind of excitement… it thrills me far more if one is enjoying the pain instead of just suffering it for the money, for example…

The story begins as she comes to the psychologist who is hypnotizing her in order to treat her with a “shock therapy”, i.e. some hard whippings in different positions.

First lovely Nicole is bound on some kind of frame to get her breasts, belly, pussy and thighs whipped, then she’s bound on a wooden rack with her legs apart and wide open. In this position she has to stand a caning and some cracks with the bullwhip. The bullwhipping continues with Nicole standing. The last position is the hottest one: Nicole is hanging in the middle of that hall, what makes her pussy and butthole accessible for another whipping.

The torture finishes, and Nicole is waking up from her hypnosis (fully clothed again in her pink shirt and sexy hotpants). She’s feeling a lot better. I always knew a good whipping can heal a depression!

Get the cure! Watch it!
